Prescription Assistance Program
If you have a chronic illness, you may be taking seven or eight medications each month, at a cost of between $1,000 and $1,500 each month. Paying for your medicine can be a burden, especially if you are on a limited income.
Now, qualifying individuals can receive help with the high cost of prescription medications. A prescription assistance program is now available to residents of McDowell Place of Danville.
The program is available to individuals who do not have any public or private insurance coverage for prescription medication and who meet certain income guidelines. A $10 fee is charged for each application filed, which is necessary for each medication.
A patient representative will meet with interested residents to help determine if they qualify for assistance.
Once an individual files an application for a certain medication, a patient representative will contact the pharmaceutical companies to get a three-month supply of medication sent to the patient's physician's office. The patient then picks up their medication from their physician's office.
With this program, an individual who normally would pay $1,000 a month for seven medications would pay only $70 for a three-month supply.
A family member of one participant said she didn't think her mother could manage financially without the assistance. She also feared her mother wouldn't take her medicine if she couldn't afford it. Through the prescription assistance program, four of her mother's medications are provided through the pharmaceutical companies at a cost of only $40 for a three-month supply. Those medications and two others had been costing $400 monthly.
